Up early to drive to Hondarribia. Freeway most of the way. Basque country would be a beautiful place to explore more. We will have to come back. You could tell we were in a different area of Spain as the written language on the road signs changed significantly. Basque is very prominent here.
Our hotel/parador is in an old, massive, austere castle. We liked the front façade, lobby, balcony patio, and the courtyard, as they had the old castle walls and features. Paul in particular was a bit disappointed in the room, however, As there wasn't a suit of armor to be found. And it was modern, except for the 10-foot-deep windowsills, because of the thick outside walls.
The courtyard within the castle.
We had lunch at an expensive Italian restaurant and wandered the town a bit.
The town is right on the shore of the Bidasoa River that is on the border between Spain and France. That is France across the river.
Then we went to the beach (on the Atlantic Ocean) in the afternoon to go swimming. Really nice beach but the water had lots of trash in it. Paul did manage to body surf a couple of waves.
Later we walked around the old town and got ice cream. Dinner was Italian again. Back to the hotel for the night. It rained during the night.
