Sunny, warm, and hazy. Did a quick drive to the city for photos in the morning light (photos in blog for July 19). Then headed out toward Barcelona via the tiny mountain Principality of Andorra, tucked between Spain and France. We had a picnic lunch in France, then arrived in it was up into the Pyrenees Mountains that run along the border between Spain and France.
The capital of Andorra, Andorra la Vella, is in a valley in a beautiful mountain setting. Andorra has no currency of its own and they accept both Spanish and French currency. Lots of duty-free shops in town.
We found some souvenir shops on the way out of town so stopped and bought a few odds and ends. We decided to go straight to Barcelona instead of spending the night in the mountains. The drive out of the mountains was spectacular.
Arrived Barcelona. Very hot. We hit 4 pensions/hostels before finding a pension (Pension Fine) that had room for the 4 of us…it was a cheap pension in a great location. Right on the walking street section near the cathedral and Las Ramblas. Bathroom was down the hall (several places we stayed had that), no air conditioning. The street turned out to be very noisy – pedestrians during the day, garbage trucks and other vehicles at night. It was so hot at night we had to sleep with the windows open...so got a lot of the street noise.
